A New Perspective on Heritage and «Dark Tourism»: Why Student Research on Chornobyl is Becoming an Industry Flagship

197 A New Perspective on Heritage and «Dark Tourism»: Why Student Research on Chornobyl is Becoming an Industry Flagship

When we talk about the development of Ukrainian hospitality, the experience economy, and the reimagining of our heritage, it is incredibly important to rely on deep, factual, and bold research. Today, I want to share with you a source of genuine pride — the research paper «The Chornobyl Exclusion Zone as an Object of Tourist Interest: An Analysis of Development and Limitations».

This project is not just another academic text. It is an absolute flagship for further scientific exploration in the field of tourism, demonstrating how the younger generation of professionals is capable of analyzing Ukraine's most complex tourist destinations.

What is the unique value of this work?

The study offers a comprehensive look at the Exclusion Zone not merely as a site of tragedy, but as a unique space where history, nature, and modern technologies interact. From a professional perspective, I would like to highlight several key aspects that make this work invaluable:

  • Deep analytics of tourist flows: The paper provides a detailed analysis of visitation dynamics from 2010 to 2021, particularly the phenomenal surge in tourist interest in 2019, driven by the influence of mass culture, namely the release of the HBO series.

  • Reimagining the space: The author aptly argues the need to perceive modern tourist Chornobyl as a unique "open-air museum" where material evidence of the era has been preserved. Special attention is given to visual symbols—from mosaics and stained glass to modern graffiti, which symbolize the return of nature and the reinterpretation of ruins through art.

  • A clear vision of the future: The study is not limited to the past but offers concrete prospects for development in the post-war period: the creation of new safe routes, the establishment of modern information centers, and the implementation of interactive technologies such as virtual reality and simulations.

  • Impeccable academic integrity: The approach to handling information deserves special respect. The official anti-plagiarism system report showed a similarity index of only 0.22%. This is a testament to colossal independent work, originality of thought, and genuine scientific ethics.

Synergy of talent and mentorship

Such fundamental works are not born in a vacuum. I want to express my sincere admiration and respect for Mykhailo Plech, a 4th-year student majoring in Tourism. Mykhailo, you have done an incredible job combining dry statistical data with your own field experience and emotional perception of the location. Your analytical approach is exactly what the hospitality industry needs today to rebuild our country.

A huge thank you to the project curator Uliana Martyniuk. Your support, professional guidance, and ability to inspire a student to create such flagship research deserve a standing ovation. It is thanks to such educators that our higher education generates true professionals capable of thinking big.

The Ukrainian school of hospitality will always support initiatives that unlock the potential of our tourism through the prism of science, safety, and respect for heritage. There is a lot of work ahead to restore the industry, and research like this will become our reliable foundation. Moving forward, new victories are ahead!
